Kenyans use Digital Technology to Change the Country’s Global Narrative
Breaking new frontiers in telling the Kenyan story
For a country that has seen its fair share of negative publicity, a new digital campaign dubbed #ThisIsMyKenya was rolled out in a bid to rally citizens to change the country’s perception and narrative locally and internationally.
The campaign – http://thisismykenya.co.ke/ – created by leading digital advertising firm, Squad Digital, for Safaricom Limited has captured the minds and hearts of Kenyans and has so far recorded over 3000 beautiful images of Kenya shared on social media including on Facebook Groups such as Kenyans in Dubai, Kenyans in Washington etc.
Stemming from a social experiment conducted with Kenyan celebrities – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdPUIt1S7I8 – #ThisIsMyKenya campaign aims to crowdsource positive stories through pictures, taking place in Kenya in a bid to change how the nation’s narrative unfolds both within and outside its borders.
Commenting on the campaign, Squad Digital Managing Director, Manish Sardana said, “Digital technology has continued to support the growth of entrepreneurship in Kenya and now we have an opportunity to use it to change the country’s narrative globally. Telling Kenya’s story positively will boost Kenya’s socio-economic fortunes and create cohesion among our people”.
So far, the campaign has achieved over 66.6 million impressions and the campaign video – social experiment – has achieved over 750,000 views between YouTube and Facebook, demonstrating Kenyans’ drive and zeal to change the way the country is perceived globally.
Safaricom Limited’s CEO Bob Collymore said that Kenyans are best placed to tell their story. This campaign gives them an opportunity to do just that.
The campaign reach continues to grow as the country seeks to re-write its story. A chance to overturn tourism and bring it back to life.
